Engineering Building Blocks for a Startup Company

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 23:46
The following are important building blocks for internet companies. I've had a friend who has worked on Win32 applications for about 10 years and is going to an internet company. I was telling him that these are the computer science advances that people at internet companies consider as core competencies. They are a must read for people who have not been working at an internet company. Internet companies are quick to build because they use these open source components, and then they build "

Laconi.ca hacking

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 16:02
So, I’ve been tweaking my laconica server. For those of you who don’t know about laconi.ca it is an open source microblogging platform. identi.ca is based on laconi.ca and it has lots of neat features, like OpenID and OAuth support. Being Open Source, you can go in and make various changes. Geeky stuff For OpenID, I’ve managed to authenticate using I-names from 2idi.com. Another person appears to have authenticated with Yahoo!. I tried idproxy.net and got a 500 Error. I managed to get through

slaughtering sandbox? July 7, 2008 at 2:02 pm · Filed under design, dot com, forums, speculation, wank There are so many responses by bubel on the forums about how you absolutely can NOT use your own themes on wordpress.com that not only am I now convinced the theme marketplace has finally been shelved but I’m starting to think custom CSS must be on the way out as well This user wanting multiple themes on the same blog, for example, could have been profitably directed to Sandbox, where any

A Big Announcement for the Library Society of the World

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 11:26
Sometimes the universe hands you a goody and makes your day. Sometimes that “universe” is Blake Carver of LISNews, and the “goody” is a brand-spanking-new website for the Library Society of the World. Check it out! http://thelsw.org/ It’s not fully operational yet. A group of us are trying to figure out Drupal and get content and functionality onto the site. But it’s there, and you can register and create a profile. If anyone out there in Libraryland is good with Drupal and has some time and

PostgreSQL vs. MySQL, as per EnterpriseDB

Mon, 07/07/2008 - 11:11
EnterpriseDB put out a white paper arguing for the superiority of PostgreSQL over MySQL, even without EnterpriseDB’s own Postgres Plus extensions. Highlights of EnterpriseDB’s opinion include: EnterpriseDB asserts that MyISAM is the only MySQL storage engine with decent performance. EnterpriseDB then bashes MyISAM for all sorts of well-deserved reasons, especially ACID-noncompliance. EnterpriseDB asserts that row-level triggers, lacking in MySQL but present in PostgreSQL, are the most importan

Augmented Learning: An Interview with Eric Klopfer (Part One)

Sun, 07/06/2008 - 23:54
For the past five years, Eric Klopfer has helped to lead the Education Arcade, the MIT based research group which is seeking to explore the pedagogical uses of computer and video games. One of his biggest contributions has been to insist that our research reflect the realities which teachers encounter with trying to deploy learning games in the classroom. Well before the Arcade launched, Klopfer has been doing cutting edge work on Augmented Reality Games. Here's a description I wrote four yea

Top Affiliate Challenge Episode #5 Was Much Better!

Sun, 07/06/2008 - 23:11
Today on the Top Affiliate Challenge, I have to say it was much better. I got a closer look at the teams and gathered some insight on what they are doing. They aired a tip from John Chow on how to cheat Google AdWords, Yahoo Publisher and Microsoft AdCenter… I wouldn’t recommend doing it though. I am sure it’s against TOS for many of these programs. They gave Ken McArthur quite a bit of air time today and I was able to discover the web site that they are using in the competition. You should vi

Looking a Little Different

Sun, 07/06/2008 - 22:17
If you are a regular visitor then you know that things are looking a little different.  After several hours of battling with Drupal errors, I was fed up.  Thanks to Eaglehawk, he helped transfer all of my Drupal 6.2 posts to Wordpress 2.5 using some information that he found on the internet. This was one of the posts, but it needed a little tinkering because it assumes that your Drupal and Wordpress are on the same databases when you do the conversion.  My SQL knowledge is fairly limited.  Eag

It's a Drupal 6 miracle - almost

It's a Drupal 6 miracle - almost Submitted by HongPong on Sun, 2008-07-06 16:57. I have to deal a lot with Drupal, which is the content management system that runs this site, my day job and some side projects. I am trying to get a new site set up for a friend of mine on Drupal 6, but there have been quite a few bugs along the way. The thing about Drupal development is that many of the key parts are based in add-on modules, rather than the core program. Drupal 6 is a really strong improvement o

Fred Wilson Imagines Drupal Organic Groups

Sun, 07/06/2008 - 17:17
Fred Wilson Imagines Drupal Organic Groups Submitted by elmer on Sun, 07/06/2008 - 11:17am. And that sounds right to me in the groups market. Charlie says the least common denominator in the groups market are these three functions: 1. A customizable site to call their own, even if it just has information as to what the group does and how to sign up. 2. A [...] full article | login

Let’s take a look at the stats for June.
